The Certification in Applied Digital Photography course is an intensive training programme designed for persons who wish to discover the digital photographic medium with the aim of entering the market as a freelance photographer or to develop photography as a serious hobby.
Students are not required to have any prior photographic knowledge or understanding of working with a Digital SLR camera or post- production software (Adobe Photoshop).
The goal of the course is to provide students with theoretical as well as practical knowledge and experience in digital photography, editing digital images as well as principles of cinematography and video editing.
After successful completion of the course, a student is expected to be able to:
- operate as a freelance photographer;
- carry out a wide range of photographic work using a Digital SLR camera, both in studio and on location;
- interpret a photographic brief;
- do advanced editing work to images using Adobe Photoshop software;
- prepare digital images for print;
- shoot footage to be used in a video production and edit video material using video editing software;
- draft quotations for photographic work;
- present a portfolio of work of the highest standard including stills and a short video clip.

If you have already completed an entry level course and/or studio photography course and wish to enrol for the Certification in Applied Digital Photography course, you can contact us to acknowledge prior learning by completing one or more assignments to test your level of competence.
A discount of R3950 applies if you pass the Introduction to Digital Photography assignment and a further discount of R4950 will apply if you pass the Studio Photography assignment.
Passing the assignments means that you will be able to start with the Introduction to Cinematography and Applied Digital Photography components of the course without having to compete the other modules first.
Already completed an entry level course but don't know how to use Adobe Photoshop?
You may apply for recognition of prior learning without Photoshop training. If you pass the competency assignment you may apply to join the Adobe Photoshop Training element of the Introduction to Digital Photography component only at a cost of R1950. In this case you need not complete the other sessions of the Introduction to Digital Photography course.

- Practical training sessions photographing:

- Abstract
- Objects
- Feedback and discussion
INTRODUCTION TO CINEMATOGRAPHY
- 4 Training Sessions of +- 3 hours each that deal with:
- Camera angles and visual interpretation for cinema
- Composition and camera angles
- Production planning
- Lighting
- Directing
- Video Editing
- Practical training sessions include producing 3 minute documentary style film using your Digital SLR camera and professionally editing the production. A number of these sessions as integrated with the Applied Digital Photography module.
EDITING DIGITAL IMAGES & VIDEO EDITING
- Various Training Sessions spread throughout the course of +- 3 hours each that deal with:
- Using Adobe Photoshop software
- Using Magix video editing software
- Progressively more advanced Photoshop work is carried out as a student advances in the training programme.
- Students are trained to produce footage for specific post-production work in order to produce superior productions by understanding the process from production-phase to final-product.
- Students are required to use their own computers for training and software for the course and is not included, but can be purchased through JASP at competitive prices.
APPLIED DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY
- Advanced theoretical and practical training is conducted in the following photographic aspects:
- Fashion Photography
- Event Photography
- Product Photography
- Wedding Photography
- Photojournalism
- Portraiture Photography
- Editorial Photography
- Model Portfolio Photography
- Action Photography
- Each of the topics above are explored during three sessions each (some topics are combined):
- Session 1:
- Introduction to the topic & brief
- The topic is theoretically discussed and students receive a photography brief
- The brief includes specific post-production work to be carried out
- Session 2:
- Carry out a photographic shoot
- The shoot is carried out either as a group or on an individual basis
- Shoots take place on location or in studio
- Session 3:
- Presentation and feedback
- Students present their work for discussion & feedback during a group classroom session
- The final assignment is to compile and photograph an advertisement.
- The goal of this section of the course is to provide students with practical experience and develop a portfolio which includes evidence of their command of the photographic medium.
- The portfolio is compiled in the form of a professional 28 page photo book, as well as an electronic format for publication on the internet - student portfolios are published on the JASP website.
3 minute DOCUMENTARY FILM (CINEMATOGRAPHY ASSIGNMENT)
As an important section of the course we aim to develop a student’s ability interpret scenes and stories using cinematographic principles. The goal of this assignment is to make a 3 minute documentary for screening at the completion of the course and to include in students portfolios. The documentary topic is provided & carried out during the Applied Digital Photography programme.
The practical application in the market for this skill could initially include making wedding videos and as a student gains experience, increasingly more complex productions can be considered.
JASP is on an on going basis directly and indirectly involved in the production of short films and students are encouraged to get involved with the various projects.

ASSESSMENT
- To ensure that you master the course material, you will be required to complete various assignments.
- A one-on-one feedback session is conducted with each student after the conclusion of each module.
- Assignments are evaluated and a proficiency certificate is awarded for each of the five modules of the course if a pass mark of 75% is achieved.

PHOTOGRAPHY EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION
- No photography experience is required.
- This course is a skills based programme and requires Matriculation. Certain exceptions can be made at the sole discretion of JASP management following an interview with a prospective student.
- Individuals of the age 21 and older do not require a Matriculation Certificate.
- The course is presented in English.
EQUIPMENT REQUIRED FOR THE COURSE
- Any brand of Digital SLR camera with an 18-55mm lens as a minimum requirement.
- An additional lens to cover a focal range of 55-200mm will be an advantage.
- A tripod is necessary to use for some assignments and during some of the practical training sessions.
- An external flash.
- Adobe Photoshop CS5 Extended is required.
- You need to use your own laptop for the Photoshop classroom sessions.
- The Digital SLR camera must have a “movie recording” function.
