Studio Photography & Lighting

Learn the principles of studio photography, studio lighting, lighting techniques and advanced editing using Adobe Photoshop.

The course deals with the principles of photography in studio, four major lighting techniques, lots of practical work and provides guidelines for setting up your own studio.

Lighting techniques which are dealt with:

  • High Key Lighting
  • Split Lighting
  • Paramount Lighting
  • Rembrandt Lighting

The programme is presented over 10, +- 3 hour sessions, including a period is allowed for students to carry out their own studio shoots. Advanced aspects of Adobe Photoshop are dealt with during two sessions.

A male or female model is used to work with the different lighting techniques.

After successful completion of the course, a student is expected to have a good fundamental understanding of carrying out photographic work in a studio, lighting techniques and using basic studio equipment. The course also aims to add high quality images to the student’s portfolio.

Theory: Session 1
An introduction to studio photography

  • Studio lights, working with a flash meter and other equipment
  • Overview of lighting techniques
  • Lighting rations
  • Diffusion
  • Abstract composition
  • Custom white balance settings and much more
  • Students receive the brief for their own studio shoots


In Studio - Practical

High Key Lighting: Session 2

  • A male or female model as well as an object is used.
  • The lighting technique is applied to light the model and, using a still life table, the object is lit as required for typical product photography.


In Studio - Practical

Split Lighting: Session 3

  • A male or female model as well as an object is used.
  • The lighting technique, photographing lines and artistic, abstract composition are explored and experimented with.


In Studio - Practical

Paramount Lighting: Session 5

  • A male or female model is used during this session.
  • Emphasis during the session is to apply the technique correctly by photographing both head shot and half body type of images.


In Studio - Practical

Rembrandt Lighting: Session 6

  • A male or female model is used during this session.
  • Emphasis during the session is to apply the technique correctly by photographing head shot images.


Classroom - Adobe Photoshop

Sessions 4 & 7

  • Gradually more advanced techniques for editing images using Adobe Photoshop is dealt with during these sessions.


Own studio shoots

Independent shoots: Session 8 & 9

  • Each student has two studio shoots during which they are required to produce their assignment images according to brief independently.


Conclusion

Present your work: Session 10

  • Each student has the opportunity to present the result of their own studio shoot and various aspects of the photography are discussed.
  • Input is provided for post production work to be carried out, improvements and general constructive criticism.


DURATION
- 10 sessions
- One of the sessions is your own studio shoot
- +- 3 hours per session

ASSESSMENT
- To ensure that you master the course material, you will be required to complete 9 assignments.
- Assignments are evaluated and a proficiency certificate is awarded if a pass mark of 75% is achieved.


COURSE FEE
- The course fee per person is R 4 950

PAYMENT TERMS
- The full course fee can be paid on registration, or
- A R2000 deposit can be paid on registration and the balance is payable the day before the course commences.

12 to 48 MONTHS TO PAY
- We have an option where you can apply for credit and have up to 12 and 48 months to pay.
- Course fees as well as equipment and software purchase can be included in the finance amount.

- We regret that credit is not available for self employed individuals.
- Applicants need to be permanently employed and receive an electronic salary payment.
- Standard banking terms and conditions for credit apply.


PHOTOGRAPHY EXPERIENCE & LEVEL OF PROFICIENCY

  • This is an intermediate course and it is required that you already know how to use a Digital SLR camera in the manual mode. The course furthermore assumes that you already know how to carry out basic post production work to images using Adobe Photoshop.
  • If you are not sure whether your level of proficiency is adequate, please contact us and we will provide you with a course entry assignment to complete.
  • The course is presented in English.

EQUIPMENT REQUIRED FOR THE COURSE

  • Any brand of Digital SLR camera with an 18-55mm lens as a minimum requirement.
  • An additional lens to cover a focal range of 55-200mm will be an advantage.
  • A tripod is necessary to use for some assignments and during some of the practical training sessions.
  • Adobe Photoshop Elements 8 or 9, or Adobe Photoshop CS2, CS3, CS4 or CS5 is required.
  • You need to use your own laptop for the three Photoshop classroom sessions.
